In Wild at Heart, David Lynch presents two lovers that have stepped outside the boundaries of ordinary life. Even if you haven’t seen the movie, its theme will be familiar: an adult fairy tale adventure of innocence and danger. As a genre, road movies are often less about a story and more about an attitude where the testing of boundaries can become both a lifestyle and an ethos – one where anything seems possible. Lula Pace Fortune and Sailor Ripley, the main protagonists, reject the expectations surrounding them to an almost destructive degree, pursuing a life driven by instinct, passion and defiance. Their freedom is risky and dangerous but it is also electrifying to witness. Their relationship forms a lens through which we can think about what it means to live, and to create, with a truly untethered spirit.
